Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Auckland - Coromandel Town
Upon arrival in Auckland, collect your campervan and begin your self-drive journey. Head towards Coromandel Town, a charming coastal destination known for its golden beaches, art galleries, and historic mining sites. A recommended stop is the Driving Creek Railway, a unique narrow-gauge railway ride through native bush that climbs to a panoramic viewing platform.

Day 2 Coromandel Peninsula - Hahei - Hot Water Beach
Journey to the beautiful Coromandel coastline with a stop at Cathedral Cove, a stunning beach accessible by a walking track featuring a natural rock arch and crystal-clear waters. Continue to Hot Water Beach where, during low tide, you can dig your own hot pool thanks to geothermal activity.

Day 3 Hot Water Beach - Rotorua
Depart Hahei early and journey south towards Rotorua, a geothermal wonderland rich in Māori culture. Start your day with a stop at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, famous for its vibrant geothermal features including the Champagne Pool and Lady Knox Geyser. Continue into Rotorua to relax at Hell’s Gate Mud Bath & Sulphur Spa, where you can enjoy a unique and rejuvenating mud soak surrounded by natural bush. In the evening, experience Māori traditions at Te Puia’s Te Pō Combo, which includes a guided tour of the geothermal valley and arts school, a cultural performance, and a delicious hāngī buffet dinner.
Day 4 Rotorua - Taupo - Napier
Depart Rotorua and head south to Taupo (about 1.5 hours) where you can enjoy a scenic stop at Huka Falls and relax by Lake Taupo. Continue your journey to Napier, passing through the lush Esk Valley. Once in Napier, take a stroll to admire its iconic Art Deco architecture, and consider visiting a local Hawke’s Bay winery for a tasting session.

Day 5 Naiper - Gisborne
Follow the Pacific Coast Highway north to Gisborne, passing through Wairoa. If time permits, stop at the beautiful Morere Hot Springs Reserve or the beaches along the route. In Gisborne, explore local wineries, unwind at Wainui Beach, or catch a vibrant sunset over the surf.

Day 6 Gisborne - Auckland
Start early for the return drive to Auckland, traveling via the scenic Waioeka Gorge and Ōpōtiki. Make a lunch stop in Whakatāne or Tauranga to break up the journey. Once back in Auckland, unwind at a well-equipped holiday park near the city and prepare for your departure the following day.

Day 7 Gisborne - Auckland Departure
Return to Auckland and wrap up your journey. If time permits, enjoy a local stop before returning your campervan and heading to the airport for your flight departure.
